The
San Francisco 49ers Academy at a Glance
Two out of every three students from East Palo Alto are not graduating
from high school -- a sobering fact with undeniable social and economic
consequences. In order to solve this crisis, we must first understand
the factors that cause it. And that's what the 49ers Academy does. We
understand that so much of what happens in the classroom in influenced
by conditions outside of school. We work directly with the most disenfranchised
student population, identifying and removing barriers to their success
in school and life.
The 49ers Academy was founded in 1996 to serve 6th, 7th and 8th grade
students from East Palo Alto who have been identified as hard to reach
and hard to teach. These “at risk” students are in great
need of personal attention, as well as support, mentoring and tutoring.
The 49ers Academy provides just that – a safe and supportive environment
staffed by highly talented teachers and staff.
For the past ten years, the 49ers Academy has championed the connection
of community resources with the young people who need them the most.
By bringing caring adults into the school to address children's unmet
needs, the academy provides the link between educators and the community.
The result: Teachers are free to teach, and students -- many in jeopardy
of dropping out -- finally have the opportunity to focus on learning.
Our proven track record demonstrates that every student can and will
achieve academic success – and they do! Over the past three years,
the 49ers Academy achieved an amazing 167 point increase on the API (Academic
Performance Index). Many graduates of the 49ers Academy are now in college
and others are well on their way. The San Francisco 49ers Academy makes
a difference! We are actively addressing our community's dropout crisis
-- one child at a time.
